Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian have had a telephone conversation.
In a statement released by the Saudi Foreign Ministry, it has been stated that the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran talked to each other on the phone at the beginning of Ramadan and agreed to start the process of opening embassies and consulates in each other’s countries. So agreed to meet soon.
In the statement of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Twitter, it is stated that the Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia Prince Faisal bin Farhan congratulated his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdullahian on Ramadan. Ramadan is starting from Thursday in both the countries.
According to the statement, the foreign ministers of the two countries agreed to hold a bilateral meeting soon to pave the way for the reopening of the embassies and consulates of the two countries.
According to the French news agency AFP, after several years of tension, the two countries had agreed to restore diplomatic relations on March 10, mediated by China, and to reopen embassies in each other’s country in two months. The expected meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries will be the next step towards the renewal of mutual relations after seven years.
The two regional rivals have a history of mutual tensions. In 2016, after the execution of a Shiite religious leader by the Saudi government, Iranian protesters attacked Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran, after which Riyadh cut ties with Tehran.
On Sunday, an Iranian official said that Saudi Arabia’s King Salman called Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and invited him to visit Saudi Arabia, but this statement has yet to be confirmed by Riyadh.
Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian also said that the two countries have agreed to a meeting between each other’s top diplomats and three locations have been proposed for it.
