Lingcod is a type of fish that is blue on the outside but also has blue flesh, which has become a scientific mystery. Photophile
Sydney: There is a large fish found on the western coast of North America called ‘ling cod’ which has a total of five different species. Char-ling cod has a normal color and inner flesh. That is, the fish is brown or brownish gray on the outside, while the flesh is whitish red, but one type has a deep blue color inside and out.
Ling cod, found in deep water, is famous for its taste. This predatory fish devours any animal it can fit in its mouth. This is the reason why its length reaches 152 cm. However, it has a bright blue color and its flesh is also of the same color. Scientists have not been able to solve this mystery so far.
In 2016, Australian mariner Aaron Galloway saw the fish for the first time, and upon catching and cutting it, found that it was blue both inside and out. But no details of this unusual reason could be revealed. This means that the matter has not been seriously researched.
Although experts know that the apparent blue color of lingcod is due to a natural pigment called ‘biliverdin’, the case for blue meat remains to be researched. Aaron then began researching and surveying more than 2,000 lingcod caught in the U.S. and other regions.
Preliminary data showed that female fishes are more blue than males. Then the smaller the fish, the more the blue color will disappear, but its rate is also very low, that is, from 4 to 25 percent of the fish flesh is blue. But still the big question is that what is the reason for this blueness?
So far, experts believe that 80 percent of females are lingo-code blue and only 20 percent of males are blue. Experts believe that the fish live in shallow water and the blue color may protect them from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. But serious scientists are not satisfied with either explanation.
However, its blue flesh returns to its normal color when cooked.
